James Risk

Veterinary Surgeon
James brings a unique blend of clinical excellence and innovative communication to Glasgow Equine Hospital. A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, his journey in equine veterinary medicine has been driven by a passion for combining high-quality clinical care with effective practice leadership.
As Head of First Opinion Practice at Glasgow Equine Hospital, James focuses on delivering evidence-based care while creating an exceptional teaching environment for veterinary students. He is currently pursuing advanced certification in Equine Dentistry, reflecting his commitment to continuing professional development and special interest in advanced dental care.
James's dedication to the equine community extends beyond clinical practice. As Chairman of the British Horse Society in Scotland and BEVA representative for the BVA Scottish branch, he plays a key role in advancing both equine welfare and veterinary medicine. His distinctive approach combines clinical excellence with creative communication, utilising his experience in video production to make complex veterinary concepts accessible to horse owners.
When not in practice, James can be found exploring Scotland's countryside with his family and their much-loved pets. His passion for equine welfare and dedication to teaching the next generation of veterinarians drives his vision for the practice's future.

Nick graduated from University of Cambridge in 2003 and after a short period working in mixed practice specialised in equine work. Nick has an RCVS certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Equine Medicine) with the University of Liverpool and is an RCVS recognised Advanced Veterinary Practitioner in Equine Medicine. His professional interests include general practice, particularly medicine.

Lucy graduated from the University of Bristol in 2021, following this she did an equine internship at a practice in South West England before moving to Glasgow Equine Hospital in April 2022. Lucy is one of our junior clinicians and is looking to gain further experience in all aspects of equine veterinary medicine but is particularly interested in internal medicine especially cardiology. Outside of work you'll find her playing canoe polo, out in the mountains or swimming, all of which she does with lots of enthusiasm and little skill.

Veterinary SurgeonAlice graduated in 2017 from Glasgow but before that she completed an Equine Sports Science degree at Hartpury College.
After graduating Alice worked as an equine and small animal vet on the New Forest before returning to Scotland to work purely as an Equine Vet. Alice loves being out and about on the road meeting clients and their horses. Her main area of interest is dentistry and she hopes to do some further qualifications in Equine Dentistry in the future.
In her spare time Alice is kept busy by her dogs, highland pony, chickens and rescue guinea pigs!

Veterinary Surgeon
Albert joined Glasgow Equine Practice in 2025, bringing with him wide-ranging experience in equine lameness, orthopaedics and poor performance cases.
He has worked in leading equine hospitals and ambulatory practices in the UK and Europe, including Bell Equine, Murrell Equine and the Royal Veterinary College Equine Practice.
Albert holds two postgraduate Certificates in Advanced Veterinary Practice and has a particular interest in diagnostic imaging and therapeutics.
His work crosses over between Glasgow Equine Practice and the Glasgow Equine Hospital, where he works closely with the hospital's orthopaedic surgeons and remedial farriers. This close collaboration ensures excellent continuity for orthopaedic cases, from initial ambulatory investigation through to advanced referral and management.
He enjoys working closely with owners and riders to investigate and manage orthopaedic problems — from subtle issues affecting performance to more obvious causes of lameness — helping horses of all types achieve and maintain soundness.
Outside of work, Albert enjoys rugby, trekking, snowboarding and fishing. He speaks English, Catalan, Spanish and Galician.
